In the official Russian translation, the abbreviation stands for "Discrete Object Identifier". However, in practice, the letter "D" is more often interpreted as "digital", which is closer to the essence.
The author and copyright holder of the system is the International DOI Foundation. This is a non-profit association of publishers that has become the supervisory body for registration agencies that have the right to assign such codes.
The idea of such digital object organization arose in 2000 (according to some sources, in 1998). Over 12 years, it was developed into the international standard ISO 26324:2012 . Four years later, a corresponding standard appeared in Russia. This is GOST R ISO 26324-2015 .
What is it for?
The DOI system allows for the creation of the most accurate and transparent data model, in which certain content can be identified in the Internet space with the utmost precision. Simply put, if a document is assigned a DOI, it will not be lost on the Global Network, even if its author is forgotten or the title is rephrased. The DOI cannot be changed: it is assigned to the material once and for all.
According to the website http://www.doi.org/ , by May 2021, about 257 million objects had received identifiers.

table.
This means that DOI cannot be compared with classic ISBN or ISSN indexes. It does not indicate a specific scale of publication, but only assigns a place in virtual space to the object.

The identifier is divided into two parts. The prefix (before the slash) is assigned by the registration authority, which may act through agencies. To obtain it, the author or publisher must enter into an agreement with the said agency. This can be done after registering with the Crossref system.
Recently, the NEL began to provide a similar opportunity. An agreement for obtaining a DOI can be concluded on the website elibrary.ru; its employees take on all actions for placing materials on Crossref.
The prefix is also divided into two parts. The numbers befor
