The thunderous arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) on the scene is freeing up real-life humans from a whole host of (repetitive and tedious) tasks that can be perfectly taken over by the latest technology. But to what extent would we be willing to entrust AI with potentially sensitive tasks (if some kind of error occurs) such as buying a flight? Google is reportedly developing an AI called “Project Jarvis” that would be able to take over the user’s computer browser to run all kinds of tasks on their behalf , from compiling information, buying a product or booking a flight. This is what The Information reports based on information provided by three people who have direct knowledge of this project from the Mountain View company.
Powered by an upgraded version of Gemini, “Project Jarvis” would be an AI specifically targeting a user’s browser (Chrome, to be precise). Its goal is to help users “automate everyday activities that are at the mercy of the web” by taking and interpreting screenshots and then clicking buttons or typing text, The Information says. At its current stage of development, Google ’s new AI would take just “a few seconds” to complete a task before moving on to the next.
Google's AI rivals are also working on similar models
The most prominent companies in the AI space are all working on models that work in a similar way to “Project Jarvis . ” Microsoft ’s Copilot Vision , for example, can engage in conversations with the user about the web pages they’re looking at. Apple Intelligence, too, will rely on what appears on the user’s device screen to multitask across different apps (a feature that will debut sometime next year). Similarly, Anthropic recently unveiled an update to its Claude chatbot that can use the user’s computer on their behalf, while OpenAI is also reportedly working on a similar model.
Google is initially planning to launch Project Jarvis in December. However, the company is reportedly considering testing the model among a small number of users first to detect any errors and fix them before a more widespread launch of the technology.
